Rafaël Rozendaal is a visual artist who uses the internet as his canvas. His artistic practice consists of websites, installations, drawings, and writing. Spread out over a vast network of domain names, he attracts a large online audience, over 12 million unique visits per year.
His work researches the screen as a pictorial space, reverse engineering reality into condensed bits, in a space somewhere between animated cartoons and paintings. His installations involve moving light and reflections, taking online works and transforming them into a spatial experience.
He also created BYOB (Bring Your Own Beamer), an open source DIY curatorial format that is spreading across the world rapidly.

The Book Affair

Automatic Books presents The Book Affair, the two days of independent art publishers fair that will take place in Venice on June 2nd and 3rd, in the occasion of the press preview days of the 54th Venice Art Biennal.
The Book Affair gathers together some of today’s most interesting independent publishing projects, with the aim to open a new public discussion on the book as a mean of research and artistic production. In the last years, we have witnessed the flourishing of independent publishing projects, and seen a network of new editors be born, followed by new types of libraries specialized in this market niche and subsequently by a specialized network of distributors. For this reason, The Book Affair includes a series of public lectures and conferences whose aim is to investigate the reasons why this new editorial nouvelle vague has exploded and which scenarios we ought to expect for its future developments.

About limits

Last week Mr Giorgio Camuffo invited us, along with our friends Temp, to do a workshop at Free University of Bozen. The theme of the workshop was “Limits”. In order to gage the physical and intellectual ability of the students we set them ten exercises. It was very funny and strange to see the students attempting to make self portraits using their feet or trying to draw perfect fifty centimeter circles without the aid of a compass. It was a wonderful experience to work with the students and test our own limits, in the context of an institution that has no limits.

About teaching

About two months ago, our dear friend asked us to participate in the formation of a group of young people. We have accepted to teach this course even if we don’t know exactly what teaching should be. Teaching is an art, it takes a huge amount of responsibility. Not even to mention it is really wearying. Even so, we are very happy to have taken the chance of this new experience because it is also an opportunity to freshen up our theoretical knowledge, given the fact we have ended our academic studies quite a while ago.
